Silly question - if it was just one chance in a million that you'd drop it, why take the shot in the first place? Surely if there was a greater chance that you'd just wound it and have to leave it to die, wouldn't that be just a tad irresponsible?

So answer it then.
Is it not irresponsible to shoot at a living creature when you only have a million to one chance of killing it?

Or to make it plainer - there's a 999,999/1 chance of leaving it injured and in agony to die slowly.

Now answer the question please.

Yes mate, I really think you should.

At what range have you zeroed your scope is another question for you to answer. I normally zero at 35 yds for a sub 12ftlb gun and you'd need quite a bit of hold over at 48yds.
I understand when you say a one in a million shot but like Uncle Phil says what if you'd wounded the bird.
I know I may sound like an old fuddy duddy but taking risky shots is not condusive with good hunting. And please believe me, I not having a go at you. Smile Smile

It's not a case of having a "dodgy shot come off", it's a case of having the judgement to not take that dodgy shot in the first place.

I'm very much a newbie to shooting, but it has been ground into me by everyone I come in contact with to respect my quarry, and, unless I'm sure of a kill, to leave it.

And as far as this nonsense

well that's just pure childishness. I've seen that kind of attitude in postings in other places, and, to be perfectly honest, thought I had escaped it.

I am bewildered at times by the righteousness of some people. Vermin are vermin, get a life. I have been a keeper and shooter for over 40 years. I have taken foxes upto 200yds on very blustery nights and have to guess the windage. Ok, I have had the odd runner, BUT, followed up and dispatched.
I have shot feral pigeons on the ground because the farmer wanted ridding of them, it's the job, don't do it, lose your permission. Having a go at driven Pheasant 50yds up is not taking a chance????????
Besides, a winged pigeon ain't gonna go far before you catch upto it.
If he felt confident in the shot, well done.
All I can say is, well judged and good shot
Dave
