Well, after last weeks lamping fogged off, met up with my mate at 10 last night. It's still too wet in the fields, so just drove round where we could get. After about 1/2 hr saw set of eyes about 500yds away, but just not interested in coming in to a caller and eventually disappeared. Managed to do the whole shoot with the only off road mile on high ground. Had a break for 15mins, then off again. Mate suddenly whispers "fox" but on top of a ridge. So bugger the caller, squeaked through teeth, came in like a rocket, then nicely stopped abot 70yds away, away went the pill. Nice thud, but the sod legged it for about 200yds then laid down, so mate kept lamp on it, and I walked to gather it up. When I got within a 10yds of it, it legged it againfor about 50 yds then laid down again. Wet ground or not, laid down, using bi-pod, it was looking straight at me,, no mistakes this time, finished up with brains like a Man. U. supporter, non existant
So, after more driving about, was eventually going to call it a night at 1, but said, just have a quick check at top end. "Fox", mate again whispers. So, resting on bonnet, squeeking with teeth again, damn thing was playing around with something, eventually stoppedstill for a moment. This one dropped like a stone.
First thought after pulling trigger, I'd missed, but the thud came late. No wonder, 170 paces and I'm 6', so wont be far off same in yds.
Both in cracking condition and both vixens , no sign of milk, but first one was bloody heavy.
Will post pics tomorrow sometime.
Dave

Having a few frosty nights down here at the mo so ground firming up a bit.Might be able to get out on the land soon if it stays, if it goes then back to soggy fields and no chance of driving them
Nice shot @ 170 was a 243 i guess with a heavier tip than i use. 50g for me 223. _________________ I do it Gun Down and Rod up !!!

Yep .243. CZ550 American. It's a right tackdriver. Have been using homerolled Nostler 70 gn BT's, but sorting out ammo for FAC renewal, found a box of Speer 70 gn TNT, these are what I used last night.
I might just be lucky with my reloads, either of 70 gn's, 1" high @100yds, & 100 gn dead on at 100yds, so no re zeroing needed
.223 will take em out at same range, no prob.
If you zeroed 1" high @100yds, you wont be an inch out from 20yds to about 210yds. This is working on Nostler 50 gn btv's running at 3300fps. At 200 yds, they still carry over 700 fpe
If you want to have a play about with your ballistics I'll mail you a program.

Bet you wished you'd never sold it now
I reload 243 for about 60p a round, against, well, never bought any for years, prob about £1.30 now, every trigger pull, so depending if you are a tight Yorkie like me just buy a box of Privi's and give em a go, bloody cheap, but don't suit all rifles. Henry Krank, £39.60/100 for 55gn sp's. for 223.

Well, after the debacle with the moor fire tonight, met up with my mate eventually. Got all gear sorted and off we went. Driving on a minor road at the top end of our boundary, immediately spotted a set of eyes. So quickly pulled through gate hole, mate out with rifle, engine off. Wait till he sets up on bonnet, lamp on. It hadn't moved, quick squeak and it slowly start to move to try wind us. Ah, stuff it, bang. 2 mins into lamping, 1 down
Another vixen, about 120yds, but this one was a lightweight, even though a couple of years old.
Odd, that no dogs yet, but another potential breeder out of the way
Anyway, to cut a long story short, must have seen about 25 Badgers, now that it's warmer, but only one roe, a buck. So plenty of taps on knee to signal eyes, but not another definate fox seen.
Called it a draw early tonight, both of us seemed knackered, so now having an anti-adrenaline drink
Dave

Plan "C" last night . Because of northerly wind, we could approach some places with a bit more confidence of not been winded as easily. Saw 3, but only one stopped to "OY", the others just seemed to be on a mission and no amount of sqeaking etc, had any effect
The one I got, a dog this time, my mate paced out at 165 yds. Picture not very good(See photos).

Well, now back from by time away, straight back into action
As it gets darker, later now, met up at 23.00. Same problem, bloody badgers everywhere. Eventually saw some eyes in a siliage field, but my mate JUST couldn't make out what it was. Squeaked away and it just stared at us, until the the sod disappeared, only to see that it was a fox as it cleared a wall, sod it
Driving down a disused railway track, my mate spotted some eyes, far away. Looked through scope, sure enough, charlie. But not interested in anything. It kept moving across from left to right, with me tracking it in the scope. It eventually stopped , pulled the trigger, VERY, long delayed thud. I knew it was a good distance, so left it until today to collect.
Because I realised it was a fair distance, I had aimed about shoulder height, 272 paces, right in the engine box.
A barren Vixen, see Sporting Photo's

Nice to see you back safe and sound Dave....
Went out on Monday night got my 1st cub this year with 2 other cubs which i couldnt get a shot at so will have to deal with them at a later stage.
Do we count cubs seperatly or as part of the fox count.
Dave you can alter my post so as to what the count should be.....
Done mate, all count the same

Met up with my mate at 23.00, had a fag and a coffee then set off. At the very top of our shoot, it is all grazing and we've seen eyes there before, but never got to recognise what they belonged to. Tonight, def a fox, about 400yds. So drove round to the other side od the valley, to be closer, sod had crossed over to where we had come from . Drove, seemed like 150mph across the field and the bloody thing had gone back to where it was at first. Then we spotted at least 1 cub as well. So, off we went again Bugger, every time we got to a good postion, the sods had moved out of range. This went on for 1 1/2 hrs, calling didn't work, so said sod it, off further down the shoot.
Driving down a farm track, mate spotted one, 2 fields away, but disappeared over a rise. So, I climbs onto the roof of my truck, bingo. 1 dead barren vixen. 4 mins later, further down the track, in a field behind a chicken run, another. This time, off the bonnet, another vixen. Looks like it had some cubs a while back, as teats starting to dry up, so, some healthy cubs to get some time.
So, after been messed around early on, a satisfying night at the end
Dave
