| I am new to pigeon shooting and found out you cannot get near to the birds. They spot you a mile off and fly.I have now bought shell decoys and put them out in a farm i shoot near a tree they usually gather.Within minutes cuople landed and i shot my first wood pigeon.in the space of 2 hours i had a few pigeons land but then it went really quite.Nothing for the rest of the day.Is this normal? The pigeons are not feeding at this farm they just seem to land on trees and fly off. What else can i do to improve my pigeon shooting?.Is the only way to shoot these birds by hiding and waiting for them?. |

you need them to be feeding on your permision .useing a rotary does help but firstly you need to find what they are feeding on .and yes it can be a waiting game.stick at it are useing a shotti or airgun |

Hi I am just returning to pigeon decoying, but used to be good at it. Decoying is just like fishing. First you have to find where the the fist/pigeons are feeding. Once you know where they are ususlly feeding set out your tackle as follows. Your hide is best positioned under a tree and if you put a couple of hangers on overhanging branches this will bring the pigeons right in.
To atract fish to your hook bait when fishing you offer feed by way of groundbaiting fish are like sheep and once one starts feeding the rest follow. Pigeons are just the same when they see your decoys set out as feeding pigeons they fly in.
Setting out your decoys in the right formation is the most important aspect of decoying. The most efective formation is by using two offset V formations facingthe wind about 25 metres ouy from your hide and 10 metres upwind. Have a good day.

I dont agree with this statement. No probs with the rest of this advise.
I started off doing this and yes the birds may come into the tree above you. But most times you don’t see or hear them approach. Their presence is often first noticed as they see you and fly away generally in the opposite direction.
I found it far more effective to site the hide about twenty five to thirty yards out to one side of the tree depending on whether you are rh or lh shot. ( I had the best results when there was just one tree along the hedge line. Less trees to land in. )
by doing this you see the birds coming in and they will often come into the pattern better or you can knock them down as they land or sit on the branches. I usually shoot with no 6 or 7 but I found that sometimes when shot sitting on a branch they just flew off as if not hit. If I watched them they often landed in a tree over the other side of the field. These could often be picked up at the end of the day if they hadn't flown off again. But when I used no5 they fell down out of this tree. _________________ 1x 410.

A day also before you shoot go and study the flight lines in that area if possible for the best results your hide should be under the flight line or as near to it as possible pigeons follow the same lines day in day out just the same as us going to work an going home , its not always possible but when it is you should have a good day, good luck. _________________ Jon |
