I have always had trouble seeing lead at the clay, as I call it - specifically when someone says give that one 6 feet ahead and two feet below. For some reason I really struggle to visualise that. I think that it may well be because of the varying angles, distances, clay types, weather and light conditions etc etc.
I managed to get away from that by seeing lead at the end of the barrels instead. So 6 foot ahead and two foot below would equate to say 3 inches ahead and 1/2 inch below (only plucking numbers out roughly there, don't use it as a rule of thumb!).
This system seems to work better for me, and just to add I do not see the barrels as a focus point, they are in my peripheral vision, and are used solely as a point of reference. I know it may sound odd, but it works for more people than you think.
My best mates girlfriend took up shooting a while ago, and she strugled to see lead at the clay, as my mate and his old man do and were trying to explain it to her as, so I mentionned the lead at the end of the barrels, and she got on a lot better.
Might be worth trying it that way, might not, you never know!
Only thing I will say is - DON'T FOCUS ON THE BARRELS NO MATTER WHAT - YOU WILL MISS!!!!

Hi Stu Love the avatar - is it you dressed up?
I never look at the end of the barrels (only when changing chokes!)
I don't really do lead as I mentioned before but if and when I need to (on extreme way out targets). I do understand the concept of lead but if I start thinking (dangerous) tooo much then I lose the plot and miss everything by 20ft.
I also see lead from barrel to clay and not by someone going 6ft in front etc. In fact I have stood and watched a group of the male species respond when asked how much lead............ everyone of them responded with a different length LOL
Other coping strategies are shutting one eye on long way out stuff or shutting both eyes and hope for best (joke outlaw!)
I have 30 inch barrels which gives me that swingability which I rely on and push harder and use the Force!

Good thread.
We must all realise that we very often see lead differently.
It is important that when taking advice from a companion about how much lead to give a target, we understand the advisors interpretation of lead.
As already mentioned earlier many men explain lead as feet or metres ahead of the clay .
Ladies very often are more comfortable whilst learning their lead library by having the explanation as distance to the left or right of their barrels.
This, I believe, is because of the initial, as a beginner, lack of confidence.
A very easy way to get a lady to understand how much lead to give a target is to equate to everyday things that she is familiar with.
It may sound daft in print but try " about a loaf of bread in front" you will be amazed how quickly they get the hang of it. |

Bang on mate, thats exactly how I help lady shooters with lead, Jane does house bricks and fag packets now.
Better than bags of sugar and washing powder I might get a slap for using those.
Explaining lead and the concept was easy as well, most of us have played Space Invaders? you are shooting away when a bonus ship goes across the top of the screen and you need to shoot before it gets there, thats how I explain the concept of lead to people. Some people need an instruction they can visualise and this works well
